Just as they had two hours before Game 3, the Celtics had Porzingis categorized as questionable for Game 4.
On Wednesday, Boston took a 3-0 series lead with a 106-99 victory over Dallas, bringing them one win away from an 18th championship without Porzingis. With a victory, the Boston Celtics will tie the Los Angeles Lakers for the most NBA championships.
The 7-foot-2 Latvian injured his left leg, tearing the tissue that normally keeps tendons in place and resulting in a dislocated tendon. The ailment has been described as rare by the team, and Mazzulla has described it as “serious.”
After sitting out the first ten playoff games due to a strained right calf, Porzingis returned for the first two games of the playoffs and played a pivotal role in the victory in Game 1.
Whether or not Porzingis plays will be unaffected by the dominant series lead, according to Mazzulla. After putting him through pre-Game 3 workouts, the medical staff determined he was not able to participate.

In the first quarter of Boston’s 107-89 victory in Game 1, Porzingis played beyond the first round of the playoffs for the first time in his career, contributing 11 of his 20 points and two of his three blocks.
The incident occurred in the third quarter of Game 2 when Porzingis claimed to have collided with Dereck Lively II, a rookie center for Dallas, as they both attempted to grab a rebound after a free shot.
Xavier Tillman Sr. scored a 3-pointer during a 20-5 Boston surge while making his championship series debut in Porzingis’s absence, and Al Horford has started all three games, including both when Porzingis was in the lineup.
“We’ve been playing all season and all playoffs without (Porzingis),” stated Jaylen Brown, a standout guard. We would be thrilled to have Porzingis play for us, of course. We change when he does. I thought X was fantastic when he filled that position, though.
After acquiring Porzingis in a trade with the Wizards last summer, the Celtics extended his contract by two years and $60 million. Next season, that deal will be activated.
Whether he suits up or not, Porzingis gives the Mavericks a shot at a title at their home court. The Mavericks got him in a 2019 trade with the Knicks, expecting to form a powerful European duo with Dallas standout Luka Doncic.
