The Minnesota Vikings acted quickly last offseason when the Green Bay Packers released running back Aaron Jones. Needing a starter, the purple and gold signed him to a one-year deal to secure his services for the 2024 NFL season.
Jones responded by having a good season with the Vikings. In his eighth season in the NFL, the veteran rusher gained over 1,100 yards on the ground and added over 400 yards through the air while finding the end zone seven times.
Now that Minnesota’s 2024 season is over, the team needs to start looking ahead to the next year and figure out which players they want on their team to help follow a surprising 14-3 effort and playoff berth.
Minnesota Vikings reveal if they want to bring Aaron Jones back for the 2025 season
The Minnesota Vikings are in an interesting spot this offseason. They could need to fill several holes on the roster if they don’t bring back some of 2024’s contributors. That includes running back Aaron Jones.
Heading into the 2025 season, the Vikings only have one halfback under contract. Although Ty Chandler showed flashes of being a capable rusher, he wasn’t consistent enough that Minnesota should be comfortable with him as the starter.
Optons for a starter could be found in the 2025 NFL Draft or in free agency. The Vikings could also attempt to bring Aaron Jones back for next season to take one big need off the table this offseason and have the ability to worry about it later.
Jones went on record this offseason saying that he would love to stick around in Minnesota until the end of his career and expressed love for the organization. The big question is whether or not the Vikings would like to make that happen.
Recently, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke with SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio and shared his thoughts on bringing Jones back and it sounds like he is hopeful that Minnesota can make it happen.

“We loved having Aaron Jones. The impact he had. He was really -you know, for the better part of his career he’d kind of been a part of backfield committees and for the most part, it was Aaron Jones was the featured back. Played 17 games. He was durable. Over 1,500 yards all-purpose for us, catching the ball out of the backfield, running, it at an elite level. So I would love to have Aaron back and then I think we just continue to grow in that room whether it’s infusing a young player in the draft or maybe another player in free agency alongside Aaron Jones hopefully.”Kevin O’Connell vis SiriusXM
The two sides seem destined to reunite for the 2025 NFL season. Hopefully, the Minnesota Vikings and Aaron Jones can figure out how to make that happen this offseason to keep him in a purple and gold jersey.
