NBA Rumors: The surprising Boston Celtics player who could end up with the Golden State Warriors

With both teams already eliminated from the 2025 Playoffs, the summer looks busy for both the Bay Area and Massachusetts franchises

Luke Kornet has ended up being important for the Boston Celtics

Luke Kornet comes from having a career with the Boston Celtics. This 29-year-old center averaged 6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1 block per game while shooting 66.8% from the field. He was the hero of the fifth game against the New York Knicks, with 10 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks. Kornet will become a free agent this offseason and will be an essential piece in the market. Recently, Marc Spears of ESPN said that the Golden State Warriors should keep an eye on Kornet.

This season, Kornet has been an integral part of Boston’s success on both ends of the court. Defensively, he protects the rim at a high level with his shot-blocking and rebounding abilities. Offensively, Kornet is an efficient scoring threat as a shooter. Additionally, Kornet’s defense opens up opportunities for his teammates. He played his role perfectly and lifted the Celtics on both ends of the court this season. Kornet’s net rating of +14.9 was one of the best in the league, showcasing his incredible value.

It is unclear whether Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford will return to the Celtics next season. As a result, Kornet could be in line for a more significant role, and re-signing him should be a priority. However, the Celtics are facing unprecedented luxury tax payments and may not be able to afford to pay Kornet a significant amount. Therefore, some team could easily outbid the Celtics. Despite his importance to the team and his likely desire to stay in Boston, Kornet may find a new home in free agency. Losing Kornet would significantly hurt the Celtics next year.

The Warriors’ Perspective

The Warriors turned their season around and made the playoffs after trading Jimmy Butler. They lost in the second round of the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves after Stephen Curry got injured. Even if Curry had remained healthy, the Warriors wouldn’t have won a title due to clear flaws in their roster, particularly the lack of size in the frontcourt. Kornet would address this need and provide the Warriors with a quality center. Moreover, Kornet is accustomed to playing in a similar system and would thrive with the Warriors. He would offer high-level rim protection and provide the Warriors with instant offensive production inside. Signing Kornet would allow them to better match up against other Western Conference teams.

According to Spotrac, the Warriors are the 16th team with the most available cap space this summer. If they can create more space, they could make a very enticing offer for Kornet. While not a star, Kornet is a high-impact player who could make a significant difference for the Warriors. Spears’ suggestion for the Warriors makes sense, given their need for a big man and Kornet’s two-way value. Only time will tell if the Warriors pursue Kornet, but the fit is evident.
