49ers Have New Opportunity to Reunite With Former RB After Release News

Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme is known for maximizing the impact of its running backs, seemingly turning water into wine at every given opportunity.

That said, the San Francisco 49ers’ unrelenting injuries at the position challenged that theory, forcing the team to start a series of different players. Christian McCaffrey remains one of the NFL’s most dynamic running backs, though his recent ailments create a need for depth just in case disaster strikes again.

Fortunately for the 49ers, a player they’re quite familiar with just became available for a potential reunion.

49ers Gifted Chance to Reunite With RB Raheem Mostert in Free Agency

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Miami Dolphins informed Raheem Mostert that they intend to release him. Mostert will turn 33 years old in April and isn’t as effective as he once was, but Shanahan has proven that his scheme can create quality production out of thin air.

Mostert is just one year removed from rushing for 1,012 yards on 4.8 yards per carry and 18 TDs, clearly demonstrating there’s juice left in the tank. He has only 759 career rushing attempts compared to 1,347 for the 28-year-old McCaffrey, creating a reasonable argument that Mostert’s body isn’t as old as his age suggests.

During his six seasons with the organization, Mostert rushed for 1,610 yards and 11 TDs. Miami head coach Mike McDaniel has a similar offensive scheme that Shanahan does, meaning Mostert’s breakout can be attributed to the same opportunities provided by San Francisco’s offense. If Mostert can produce for the Dolphins, he can produce for the 49ers.

This would be an easy, low-cost reunion that’d give Mostert a legitimate chance to win a championship before he hangs up his cleats. Shanahan and the 49ers obviously need a contingency plan for McCaffrey, and Mostert is among the best value adds on the market. He knows the system and is an effective runner. For a team that faces difficult decisions in free agency, this is a win-win situation.

Whether or not Mostert is interested in coming back remains to be seen, but the team needs to do its best to find out.
