49ers Free Agency: Position-by-Position Look at Defense That Could Add Joey Bosa

As the San Francisco 49ers enter the 2025 free agency period, the team is expected to make significant defensive moves. One of the most intriguing possibilities is the potential signing of Joey Bosa, who was unexpectedly released by the Los Angeles Chargers. This move could reunite him with his younger brother, Nick Bosa, creating one of the most formidable defensive duos in the league. Below is a position-by-position analysis of the 49ers’ defensive needs and how Joey Bosa might fit into their plans.

Defensive Line

The 49ers have already begun restructuring their defensive line, starting with the release of defensive tackle Maliek Collins. Collins struggled with consistency last season, and his departure, along with a potential exit of Javon Hargrave, leaves the team thin in the trenches. The current roster includes players like Jordan Elliott, Kalia Davis, and Evan Anderson, but none bring the elite level of play that Joey Bosa offers. Adding Bosa to the mix would not only strengthen the pass rush but also allow Nick Bosa to be even more effective, with offenses struggling to contain both edge rushers.

Linebackers

Retaining Dre Greenlaw is a top priority for the 49ers, as he remains a key playmaker in the middle of their defense. With Fred Warner anchoring the linebacker corps, the 49ers are in a strong position at this level. However, depth remains a concern, and they may look to add rotational pieces through free agency or the draft.

Cornerbacks

The secondary could see some turnover, with Charvarius Ward potentially seeking a more lucrative contract elsewhere. Renardo Green had an impressive rookie campaign, but the 49ers need more experience and depth at the position to remain competitive against top-tier passing attacks. If Ward departs, the team will likely pursue a veteran cornerback in free agency or make a move in the draft.

Safeties

Talanoa Hufanga is rumored to be on his way to the Denver Broncos, which would leave a major gap in the safety position. The team has Malik Mustapha, who could step up, but ensuring stability in the deep secondary remains a priority. The 49ers may look to bring in an experienced safety to mentor Mustapha and provide leadership.

Conclusion

Signing Joey Bosa would be a bold move for the 49ers, not just from a talent perspective but also as a marketing opportunity—having both Bosa brothers terrorizing quarterbacks would be a spectacle for fans. However, concerns over Joey Bosa’s recent injury history and contract demands must be weighed carefully. If the 49ers can manage their cap space effectively, adding him could solidify their defense as one of the best in the NFL.
