They may be 5-1, but the Golden State Warriors are desperate right now.
Stephen Curry turns 37 in March, and Golden State still hasn’t been able to trade for another superstar to pair with Curry.
There’s no reason why a Curry-led Warriors can’t contend if Golden State’s brass brings in another star. Curry might be getting older, but his shot’s only getting better, and he’s never relied on athleticism.
Golden State has the assets to trade for another franchise player, but who? They’ve been linked to Jimmy Butler on more than one occasion recently. Crazy possibilities like Kawhi Leonard or Ben Simmons can’t be ruled out.
All three of those guys come with baggage, though, most notably on the injury front.
If the Warriors could bring in a durable superstar in his prime, there’s no reason Curry wouldn’t contend for a fifth ring.
Shockingly, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks might not be off the table for the Warriors.
While a Curry-Giannis pairing seems too godly to be possible, Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus has reminded us that Antetokounmpo could plausibly be traded to Golden State in a multiple-team trade.
On Friday, Cyrus Saatsaz of the Golden Daze podcast cited Pincus in discussing that very scenario.
“Since Jimmy Butler to the Warriors is a talking point … wanted to remind folks that @EricPincus of @BleacherReport was recently on @GoldenDazePod explaining in detail how the team could realistically trade not just for JimmyBuckets, but Giannis!” Saatsaz said.
Pincus then took to X to clarify the story, referencing a report he had written about the possibility of Butler-to-Warriors.
“To be clear 1 or the other, not both!” Pincus said.
“Sub in Giannis’ name wherever I wrote Jimmy. Not exactly but the general vibe … (Note, can be done as a 3-team, bigger issue is GSW getting back to 14 players).”
With the situation in Milwaukee growing grim, Giannis being traded has suddenly become a possibility in 2024-25. Could the Warriors be the team to land the two-time NBA MVP?
