Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel reveals the team’s motivation to trade Joe Milton to the Cowboys

Joe Milton quickly became a fan-favorite in New England after he was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

However, considering the team had Drake Maye along with veteran Jacoby Brissett last season, his reps were very limited. He had a promising performance in the team’s season finale, and because of that, it sparked trade discussions.

Ultimately, New England got a deal done, sending him to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month.

And on Tuesday, head coach Mike Vrabel detailed why the team traded him.

“Well, we felt like his reps were going to be decreased as we worked through the offseason,” he told reporters. “We felt like with every other decision, we’re going to try to do what’s best for the team and that’s the decision we ultimately made.

Along with Maye, the team also brought in veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs on a two year deal, which further cemented that if Milton stayed, he would be the third string quarterback once again.

This way, the team will move forward with Maye and Dobbs, while Milton gets an opportunity to compete for a backup position.

“So, we’re excited to move forward with Drake and Josh,” Vrabel said.
