Packers ‘looking’ for veteran WR, and Davante Adams is now available

Another report linked the Green Bay Packers to wanting a veteran wide receiver this offseason, and it just so happens that a familiar and formidable name is available and possibly hitting the market soon.

Packers 'looking' for veteran WR, and Davante Adams is now available

According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Packers are expected to be spenders in free agency, and they’re currently “looking to add a veteran wide receiver.”

The idea would be to add a receiver with experience to help stabilize a young room featuring nothing but players on rookie contracts, and the Packers will need to find a way to replace some of what Christian Watson brought to the table as a versatile deep threat while he recovers from a significant knee injury.

Another big story coming out of the NFL Scouting Combine intersects with reporting on the Packers’ desire for receiver help. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the New York Jets are accepting trade offers for former Packers receiver Davante Adams, and the team is prepared to release him if no deal is found.

The Packers might not be super interested in swinging a trade for Adams, who has non-guaranteed base salaries of over $35 million in both 2025 and 2026. In fact, no team is probably interested in acquiring Adams’ deal. But signing the All-Pro receiver if he is released by the Jets has to be under consideration in Green Bay.

Adams turned 32 years old last December, but he still caught 85 passes for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns over 14 games with the Raiders and Jets last season. He finished the 2024 season catching touchdown passes in five of the last six games, and he turned in a vintage Adams performance against the Jaguars, catching nine passes for 198 yards and two scores in the road win. He is no longer at the dominant levels of his 2018-2022 run, but Adams is still capable of getting open and creating big plays in big spots.

The Aaron Rodgers factor looms large, and it’s possible Adams would follow the future Hall of Fame quarterback to his next destination — assuming Rodgers wants to play in 2025.

But a reunion with the Packers makes good sense for an older but still effective player who would help check an important box for Brian Gutekunst’s roster checklist this offseason. Adams can play on the perimeter or in the slot and has experience in Matt LaFleur’s offense, so he could be the ideal veteran leader for young pass-catchers like Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and Romeo Doubs in 2025 while helping the Packers chase their title dreams.

The Packers want a veteran receiver. Adams is on his way out of New York. The stars may be aligning on a reunion in Green Bay.
