Not a WR, Not a RB – What Are the Cowboys Really Targeting in Round 1?

The Dallas Cowboys are probably going to take a skill-position player with the No. 12 pick in this month’s NFL draft, but it might not be the running back many have predicted.

Dallas needs more help in the passing game alongside top wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and there is a reasonable chance that arguably the best pass-catcher in the 2025 class will fall to the Cowboys.

Penn State tight end Tyler Warren finished last season with 104 catches for 1,233 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus predicted on Monday, April 7, that Warren will dip outside of the top 10 and the Cowboys will pounce when he does.

“Dallas is in need of playmakers all over the offense, and here they have a choice between Matthew Golden and Tyler Warren,” Cameron wrote. “While they would be well served to nab either, Warren is a unique playmaker who would unlock this offense. With Jake Ferguson on the roster — and in a contract year — Dallas can become a more versatile offense after running one of the lowest rates of 12 personnel (10.8%) in 2024, due in part to a lack of talent at the position.”

The Chicago Bears are perhaps the most likely competition for Warren and select No. 10 overall. However, the Bears are also a threat to trade up for a player like Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter if the opportunity presents itself, or a candidate to trade back and accumulate more early-round draft capital after an active session of free agency in March.
