LeSean McCoy advises Dak Prescott to prepare for trade after Cowboys added Joe Milton III: “Find a realtor”

Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy warned Dak Prescott that he should ready himself to be traded because new signing Joe Milton III is a very capable quarterback.

Joe Milton III hasn’t even signed his Dallas Cowboys contract yet and is already causing trouble for Dak Prescott. FS1’s LeSean McCoy believes the Cowboys trading for the former New England Patriots quarterback is a warning from Jerry Jones to Prescott.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced the Cowboys trading for Joe Milton III from the Patriots. The Patriots sent Milton and a 7th-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for Dallas’ compensatory 5th-round pick.

Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy sees this as a power move from Jones to keep Prescott on his toes every day.

I’ll just be honest, man, listen. If Dak Prescott has [a season] like he’s always had, going into next year, Dak, find a realtor. Because Joe Milton’s got talent, he can play.

LeSean McCoy said in a recent segment of Speak on FOX Sports 1

Milton only played one game for the Patriots in his rookie season. In week 18, Milton threw 22 completions for 274 yards and one touchdown. The small sample size was enough to convince the former Chiefs and Bills rusher that Prescott’s days may be numbered.

I’ll say this, y’all laugh and all that. I’ve seen other quarterbacks get paid a lot of money, and [teams] move on from them.

Milton’s trade to the Cowboys has been teased since the off-season trade window opened. The Patriots sent a signal that they were interested in listening to offers for Milton after signing Joshua Dobbs to a two-year contract to back up Drake Maye. Dobbs was part of the San Francisco 49ers last season.

Should the Cowboys take LeSean McCoy’s advice and trade Dak Prescott?

It will not be easy for the Cowboys to move on from Prescott. The 31-year-old at present is the highest-paid player in NFL history after signing a four-year, $240 million deal last offseason. Prescott’s contract carries a cap hit of $50.5 million in 2025, $74 million in 2026, $68 million in 2027, and $78 million in 2028.

Furthermore, Prescott added a no-trade clause to his current deal. Unless he agrees to waive the no-trade clause and finds a suitable trade partner that agrees to pay him $61 million per year, he will remain the Cowboys quarterback.

The Cowboys lost their longtime backup, Cooper Rush, to the Baltimore Ravens, while Trey Lance is on the verge of moving north of the border. Will Grier is the only other quarterback left on the depth chart.

Despite falling to the sixth round last year, Milton won football fans over through his cannon of an arm. On top of it, he can also cover ground very efficiently.

What led to Milton’s trade to the Cowboys?

Jones was on the lookout for a QB to push Prescott. He brought in Lance for the exact same reason in 2023, but the former first-rounder turned out to be a failed project.

Prescott is a good quarterback. However, exploits have only been limited to the regular season. Since entering the league in 2016, the Cowboys have won only 2 playoff games out of seven attempts.

The 2024 season was a new low for the Cowboys. Prescott injured his hamstring during week 9’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Rush replaced him for the rest of the year, but after losing 34-6 against divisional rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, Jones hinted that he wasn’t happy with the results.

I don’t want to be sarcastic, but have you got the same arithmetic I’ve got? We’ve won three games with Dak [Prescott]. So, I’m just saying we weren’t playing well with Dak [not] at all. So, there’s a lot to work on here, and we are all aware of that, and [it’s] very concerning.

Jerry Jones said after the Cowboys loss to the Eagles

The Cowboys finished the year with seven wins, which resulted in Jones parting with head coach Mike McCarthy. Jones replaced McCarthy with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Recently, Schottenheimer traveled to Palm Beach with Jones to attend the annual owners’ meeting over the weekend. There, he spoke about the Cowboys’ plans to draft 12th overall.

We don’t want to ever pick 12th again. We don’t want to pick that high. But you’re looking for guys that influence the game. How do you influence the game? You rush the quarterback, and you get sacks, strip sacks, fumbles, whatever it is. You score touchdowns.

Brian Schottenheimer said. (H/T: Athlon Sports)

The Cowboys usually don’t draft a quarterback that high. Due to the lack of QB depth, analysts speculated whether Jones might pull off the unexpected. Texas QB Quinn Ewers was among the favorites as Prescott’s potential backup, but trading for Milton may have closed that door.

Milton’s football career

Joe Milton III is a solid quarterback. He spent three years in Michigan before moving to Tennessee. During his sixth and final year in college football, Milton threw 226 completions (64.5%) for 2796 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, along with 75 carries for 292 yards and 6 rushing touchdowns.

The Patriots drafted Milton 193rd overall. It was the pick they received by trading former first-rounder Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
