Lakers face tough decision as Luka Doncic extension talks loom

Los Angeles Lakers are entering one of the most pivotal offseasons in recent memory, with two major decisions hanging over their front office. On one hand, they must wait to hear from LeBron James about his plans as he nears the end of his career. On the other, they face an equally significant dilemma with Luka Doncic, the franchise’s most recent superstar acquisition.

Despite early hopes that Doncic would quickly commit to a long-term future in Los Angeles, new reports suggest there’s growing concern he may delay signing an extension. While Doncic is under contract for one more season, the Lakers reportedly have the option to offer him a four-year deal worth nearly $230 million this summer. However, insiders hint that Doncic might prefer a shorter, three-year extension with a player option, similar to Donovan Mitchell’s recent strategy, to re-enter free agency in 2028 with 10 years of service and maximize his next deal.

Could the Lakers risk losing Luka for nothing?

If Doncic declines to extend his contract, the Lakers could be forced into a corner. Michael Saenz of Sir Charles in Charge speculated that Los Angeles might entertain a blockbuster trade to avoid the risk of losing Doncic for nothing in free agency. Though no formal trade discussions have been reported, the mere possibility highlights the pressure the Lakers are under.

This scenario would be far from ideal. After all, Doncic is one of the league’s top five players, a generational talent whose presence has already shifted the identity of the franchise. Trading him would send shockwaves across the NBA and could signify a dramatic pivot in the Lakers‘ long-term vision.

For now, there’s no solid evidence that Doncic wants out of Los Angeles. He’s publicly expressed a desire to prove himself in the purple and gold and to silence critics from his Dallas days. But this summer, the Lakers must move decisively.
