Jerry Jones hints at bold Mike McCarthy plan and dismisses ‘crazy’ Cowboys concerns

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could be in the market this offseason for a new head coach, though he expressed confidence in Mike McCarthy on a Dallas radio station this Tuesday

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was likely riding the momentum of his 4-7 team turning their season around with a nail-biting victory over the Washington Commanders last Sunday during his weekly radio hit on 1053thefan. The longtime Cowboys owner left the door open for the much-beleaguered head coach Mike McCarthy to return next season.

McCarthy is a former Super Bowl winner with the Green Bay Packers and is fresh off three-straight 12-win campaigns (albeit with just one playoff victory). Despite being regularly chastised in the press, Jones came to his support on Tuesday.

When asked if McCarthy could return next season, Jones said “I don’t think that’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy. Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach.”

“Mike McCarthy has been there, done that,” the Cowboys owner continued. “He’s got great ideas. So the bottom line is in no place in my body language or anything else have you seen an indication about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t. We’ve got a lot of football left.”

McCarthy’s pulled off a remarkably 34-26 win on Sunday after Washington kicker Austin Siebert shanked a potential game-tying extra point with 21 seconds left after a stunning Terry McLaurin 86-yard touchdown.

The victory snapped Dallas’s five-game losing streak but still leaves them on the outside looking in of the NFC playoff picture at 4-7. With starting quarterback Dak Prescott out for the season, the Cowboys will have to rely on backup Cooper Rush the rest of the way.

Sports talk shows like ESPN’s ‘First Take’ have harped on Colorado head coach Deion Sanders as a potential coaching candidate for the Cowboys this offseason. His Buffaloes sit at 8-3 – the program’s most since 2016 – and sit in the AP top 25.

‘First Take’ has also proposed former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick as an option. The six-time Super Bowl winner has spent 2024 out of coaching.

“I really haven’t talked about it all year and not going to start on a short week and an important division game,” Jones said about who his coach might be next year.

“I’m not going to throw away positive vibes, either. So keep them coming. It’s all good. But, yeah, that’s not something I’m really focused on.”

The Cowboys will now look to string together a winning streak with their Thanksgiving Day matchup against the New York Giants.
