J.J. McCarthy takes to social media with bold statement about future of Vikings legend
The future of Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith is one of the biggest question marks of the offseason. Right now, there are questions if he’s played his final game with the franchise and in the National Football League.
Smith has been one of the best safeties in the NFL over the course of his 13-year career after the Vikings traded up to take him in the first round in the 2012 NFL Draft.
After the loss against the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs, Smith spent time reflecting on his career in the locker room, raising more questions about his future.
J.J. McCarthy asks for Harrison Smith to return
Other than whether or not Smith will return, the biggest question surrounding the Vikings is at quarterback. Will it be Sam Darnold or J.J. McCarthy behind center when the season begins?
Regardless of who that might be, McCarthy is already showing his leadership off the field, taking to Instagram on Friday night trying to recruit Smith back to the Vikings for one more season

It’s no secret that the Vikings’ defense would be in a better place with Smith back. Plus, his performance shows that he’s nowhere near done. Smith played really well this season and his leadership and intelligence were huge in the Vikings’ success on defense.
With the Vikings having five of their top six defensive backs hitting free agency (Smith included), having one of them stay could be huge for the Vikings next season.
Will this come to fruition? That answer will likely come after the NFL Scouting Combine when decisions were made in the previous two years. If Smith stays, the youth the Vikings will likely have on defense will end up getting some much-needed mentorship.
