Is Brian Schottenheimer the next Dallas Cowboys head coach? That’s what reports say

Do the Dallas Cowboys have their next head coach? Per multiple reports, Jerry Jones is in final negotiations to stay in house and promote offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.

According to those reports, Schottenheimer has had multiple interviews with Dallas — and no one else — and a contract could be finalized on Friday.

On the one hand, Schottenheimer didn’t appear on many lists of prospective coaches. On the other hand, he’s cheap and won’t overshadow Jones.

Who is Brian Schottenheimer?

The son of legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, Brian Schottenheimer played quarterback for Kansas and Florida in the early 1990s before going into coaching.

He started as an assistant for the Rams in 1997 and has spent most of his career in the NFL. His first offensive coordinator job was with the Rams in 2012 and he came to the Cowboys in 2022.

Schottenheimer is 51 years old.

What did Schottenheimer do with the Cowboys?

He came to Dallas from Jacksonville in 2022. He spent the ’22 season as an analyst, then was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. Head coach Mike McCarthy, however, was the primary play caller.

Why is Schottenheimer a front-runner to be the Cowboys’ next coach?

This says Jones probably thought seriously about keeping McCarthy, but couldn’t come to any kind of terms. Schottenheimer is perceived as someone who will know his place under Jones and he won’t come with a big price tag for a first head-coaching job. There won’t be a bidding war.

Will Schottenheimer be hired as Dallas Cowboys head coach?

Nothing is official and these things can always change, but the sources are reputable and this appears likely to happen before the weekend.
