Before NFL free agency season kicks off, it’s cryptic tweet season. That time of the year where pending free agents, many of which aren’t even active on social media, send out a post that raises eyebrows around the football world as fans and media members alike try to decipher its meaning.
Sometimes, they’re the first indication of a new deal or of an imminent divorce between player and franchise. And sometimes, it’s not football related at all and we’re just wasting our time by even discussing. I’ve got to admit, I’m a sucker for this time of year. The Dallas Cowboys aren’t that active in free agency so I’ll take any chance I can get to embrace some drama.
On Monday, we got our first cryptic post of the offseason by a Cowboys’ pending free agent. None other than running back Rico Dowdle.
Dowdle posted a verse from the bible on X, reading “Let the blind lead the blind!”
Let the blind lead the blind!
— Rico Dowdle (@ricodowdle) March 3, 2025
The verse is considered to mean ignorant people lead others who are equally clueless to failure.
While the post could absolutely not be football related, Dowdle hadn’t posted anything himself since January and August before that (excluding reposts). He’s just not active so to him to tweet such a message one week removed from free agency frenzy is worth noting.
If it is football related, it could very well be a shot to the Cowboys in the event negotiations for a new deal aren’t going his way. It could also be a shot toward media members or fans doubting if he’s deserving of a big payday.
Fresh off of a career year, Dowdle is one of the most intriguing Cowboys’ pending free agents. With the No. 12 overall pick, Dallas is considered a candidate to select star running back prospect Ashton Jeanty. He and Damien Martinez are the first couple of known Top-30 visits ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. However, Dowdle did enough rushing for 1,079 yards and might not turn out to be highly expensive, which makes him an option even if the front office aims to address the position in April.
The news cycle in the Cowboys’ sphere has been all about Osa Odighizuwa and Micah Parsons but Dowdle represents a tough decision as well. We’ll see how it plays out.
