While Kansas City Chiefs fans will never wish injuries on their division rivals, there is no denying the benefits it has afforded every team over the years. Injuries are a part of the game, and at times, there is simply an element of luck that can push a season in either direction. Having dealt with the loss of Rashee Rice in the 2024 season, Kansas City understands firsthand how difficult this can be. However, it seems this disadvantage now belongs to a Kansas City rival.
Las Vegas Raiders star Christian Wilkins is attempting to recover from a Jones fracture. The latest update paints a bleak picture that has the defender’s status in question. Head coach Pete Carroll called it a “long and challenging process,” pointing to just how in question Wilkins is over the next months. For the Chiefs, this could provide an undeniable advantage as they look to reset the offensive line with the loss of Joe Thuney. Not having to face Wilkins in one or both matchups would aid the team’s quest for continued division dominance.

Really bad update on Christian Wilkins foot. Hopefully he’s ready by camp. https://t.co/pbWFn1VpH0

While this stands to possible benefit the Chiefs the Raiders truly aren’t a concern. After over a decade of dominance Kansas City fans are going to have to see a consistent challenge to fear their division rivals. The 2024 season offered little threat despite both the Chargers and Broncos making the playoffs.
For Kansas City, there simply isn’t a reason to fear the Raiders even when the roster is fully healthy. Las Vegas is going to need at least a year to build under new head coach Pete Carroll and for quarterback Geno Smith to adjust to his new team. Aside from Maxx Crosby, there simply isn’t a proven presence for Kansas City fans to fear.
The Broncos, Chargers, and Raiders at full health have to treat each game against the Chiefs as their personal Super Bowl. Considering the trio of teams isn’t getting past Mahomes and Reid for a legitimate chance at a ring anytime soon, this is understandable. Still, Wilkins injury serves as a reminder of how far the gap remains between Kansas City and the rest of the division.
