Brock Purdy injury update: Kyle Shanahan reveals highly concerning issue for 49ers QB

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gave an injury update on quarterback Brock Purdy after the Monday Night Football game against the Detroit Lions. Shanahan told reporters that Purdy is dealing with a nerve issue in his right elbow and will undergo tests on Tuesday. The 49ers head coach was non-committal on Purdy’s status for the regular-season finale.

Purdy suffered the injured elbow when he was sacked by Lions safety Brian Branch and landed on his throwing arm with two minutes remaining in the game. He left the game and was replaced by backup Josh Dobbs. Purdy finished the game with 377 passing yards three touchdowns and two interceptions in the team’s 40-34 loss.

After the game, Purdy told reporters that he would have an MRI on his elbow tomorrow. He then said his elbow didn’t feel the best and it felt “on fire” after he suffered the hit.

This a concerning injury for Purdy because he suffered an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow in the NFC Championship game back in January 2023. He had surgery on the elbow in March and was ready to play when the 2023 regular season began in September.

Brock Purdy’s elbow injury history

“It’s going well. Just taking it one day at a time. Just trying to heal up and feel a little bit better every single day, and it’s all gone as planned,” Purdy told CBS Sports in April 2023. “Obviously we’re in great communication with the doctors that I’m working with, the Niners, the organization as a whole, everyone’s on the same page and we’re excited for how it’s going. So just taking it one day at a time, man.”

In 2023, Purdy went on to have a breakout season, completing 69.4 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a 113.0 passer rating. Purdy was named to the Pro Bowl, finished fourth in MVP voting and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance.

The 2024 season has been a little more challenging for Purdy. Heading into the Monday night game, the 25-year-old had completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,487 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with a 94.4 passer rating in 14 games.
