Dallas fans should be upset if Jeanty or any other running back is the team’s first-round pick
The Dallas Cowboys have long been the preferred destination for promising star running back Ashton Jeanty. A former high school football player in Frisco, Texas, Jeanty has made no secret of his desire to return home on draft night.
For a while, it seemed that Jeanty would get his wish. Many early projections had him at number 12.
But as the Cowboys‘ needs have become more apparent and Jeanty’s value has increased, that reality has become more unlikely. Jeanty could well go in the top six, possibly to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Several teams will fight for Ashton Jeanty
The Cowboys need a young running back and Jeanty would certainly fill that need from the start. However, some believe that Dallas could be dodging a bullet with these changes.
Cody Williams of FanSided pointed out the possible “botch” for each team in the first round, stating that the Cowboys could find themselves in that position if they select Jeanty.
If he’s there, the Cowboys should let him pass. It’s not just a running back class with a lot of depth in the draft, but Dallas has more pressing needs at receiver, defender, cornerback, etc. Dallas fans should be upset if Jeanty or any other running back is the team’s first-round pick.
Now, the first part of that stance is certainly debatable. The Cowboys have holes everywhere and when talking about what they might do at the No. 12 spot, there are a world of options.
In any case, they are guaranteed a talented player who should generate some expectation. However, there should be no disappointment in drafting an outstanding player in his position in the first round of the draft.
Jeanty is climbing up draft boards for a reason. Cowboys fans may have cause for concern given the history with Ezekiel Elliott, but they are less likely to get burned here by a bad evaluation.
It is certainly an important decision for Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, Will McClay, Brian Schottenheimer and everyone involved. Dallas needs to get a key piece on both sides of the field. In the end, whether it’s Jeanty or not, it matters little. Acquiring talent that performs is the most important thing.
