Jonathan Allen was one of the biggest names on the free-agent market following his release from the Washington Commanders and the Minnesota Vikings made a move to bring him in. According to NFL Network, the Vikings and Allen have agreed to a three-year deal worth $60 million.
Jonathan Allen didn’t take long to find a new home.
The former Washington Commanders defensive tackle is signing a three-year, $60 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday, per sources informed of the deal. The team has since announced Allen agreeing to terms.
The Commanders released Allen late last week after attempting to trade the veteran. Allen was due $15.5 million in base salary this season but had zero guaranteed dollars left. His new deal will pay him $20 million annually.
The 30-year-old defensive tackle was a staple of the Washington defensive core, generating 42.0 sacks over eight seasons. He played in just eight regular-season games last season due to a pectoral injury, netting three sacks, but was able to return to close the season and the Commanders’ playoff run.
Allen overlapped with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell for three seasons in Washington (2017-19).
The big-money addition provides needed beef to the Vikings’ interior. Pairing Allen on the inside with edge rushers Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner makes Brian Flores’ defensive front even scarier for quarterbacks.
