Packers players have interesting complaints about specific aspect of Matt LaFleur’s style per latest NFLPA report cards

The NFL Players Association released on Wednesday the third edition of their Report Card, a survey for players to reveal how they perceive the franchises, leaders, and facilities in the NFL.

Overall, the Green Bay Packers ranked seventh amongst the 32 teams.

The best grades came for weight room (5th), training room (5th), food/dining area (6th), and nutritionist/dietician (7th). Meanwhile, the areas to improve according to the players are the head coach (20th) and strength coaches (27th).

Matt LaFleur still got an A-, which is obviously good, so the ranking is important to offer a comparison with other coaches around the league. The survey still reflected players’ praise to the team culture, “which is reflected in strong ratings for head coach Matt LaFleur and President/CEO Mark Murphy.”

According to the report, 93% of Packers players feel their head coach is efficient with their time, a rank of 18th out of 32. However, the players feel that LaFleur is moderately receptive to locker room feedback on the team’s needs, ranking him 23rd of 32 head coaches in the league.

Even though the Packers don’t have an owner, president Mark Murphy was praised by his leadership. Players feel that Murphy is extremely committed to building a competitive team, a rank of seventh of the 32 NFL leaders. They also think Murphy, who will leave his job to retire in July, contributes to a positive team culture.

According to the NFLPA report card, “Last year, they upgraded the players’ meeting room and added an underground parking facility. Although these areas are not formally captured in the Report Cards, it demonstrates the team’s commitment to improve the players’ daily experience.”

Conditioning

Last year, Matt LaFleur rebuilt his strength and conditioning staff. The Packers hired former San Francisco 49ers assistant Aaron Hill as the coordinator, and the assistants are Marcus Jones, Ben Schumacher, and Todd Hunt.

The early results haven’t been that great, though. According to the survey, 85% of players reported that they get an individualized training plan from their strength coaching staff, ranking the team 29th out of 32. The players feel that the strength coaches moderately contribute to their overall success, 23rd in the league.

For players, the locker room needs improvement. The space is perceived as sufficient, but it should be renovated and upgraded.

Since Matt LaFleur got hired as a head coach in 2019, the Packers have tried to establish a team-led culture. Because of that, valuing their opinions on how the franchise operates is particularly relevant.
