After a disappointing 2024 season in which the San Francisco 49ers accumulated a 6-11 record and finished last in the NFC West, they’re likely ready to attack the offseason.
Of course, one of the biggest components of that is free agency, with players allowed to sign with new teams starting on March 12.
There are a few areas in which the 49ers can improve, and one of these is in the secondary and help could be on the way.
In an article from Pro Football Focus’ Marcus Cameron, cornerback D.J. Reed, who’s set to hit free agency, was linked to the 49ers as an “offseason dream scenario.”
“Reed and the 49ers should have a mutual interest in reaching a deal to reunite the cornerback with his former defensive play caller in New York,” he wrote. “Robert Saleh highly values outside cornerbacks who can stand up in man coverage in his scheme, something Reed has excelled at, earning an 83.1 man coverage grade in their time together.”

Reed is coming off a solid year with the New York Jets, being targeted 63 times, allowing 36 completions for 406 yards, two touchdowns, and an 87.1 passer rating.
He would be a huge improvement to the 49ers’ defense, which in 2024 had its ups and downs, ranking eighth in total yards per game allowed (317.4) but tied for 27th in points per game allowed (25.6).
Reed’s market value, per Spotrac, is currently $14.7 million annually, meaning it will cost a lot of money to bring him in.
