49ers’ Ricky Pearsall ‘finds positives in darkness’ of rookie season

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has faced significant challenges during his inaugural NFL season. After being selected 31st overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Pearsall’s preseason was disrupted by shoulder and hamstring injuries, limiting his participation in the team’s offseason program.

Tragically, just before the season opener, Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco’s Union Square. The incident occurred on August 31, when a 17-year-old assailant attempted to steal his luxury watch. Remarkably, Pearsall avoided damage to vital organs and nerves, thanks in part to the swift actions of emergency responders.

Following the incident, Pearsall was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, causing him to miss the first six games of the season. He returned to practice in mid-October and made his NFL debut in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, recording three receptions for 21 yards.

Pearsall’s resilience was further demonstrated in Week 17 against the Detroit Lions, where he achieved a career-high eight receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown. This performance earned him a nomination for the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week award.

Reflecting on his tumultuous season, Pearsall expressed gratitude for the support from his family, teammates, and coaches. He emphasized finding “light in all the darkness,” attributing his recovery and return to the field to a renewed perspective and faith.

Pearsall also acknowledged the mentorship of veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who provided guidance and support throughout the season. Samuel’s influence has been instrumental in Pearsall’s development and adjustment to the professional level.

As the 49ers conclude their season, Pearsall’s journey stands as a testament to his determination and resilience, offering a source of inspiration amid adversity.
