49ers Name Starting Quarterback For Week 12 Amid Brock Purdy Injury

Since taking over for Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance in the middle of the 2022 season, Brock Purdy has not missed a start due to an injury. But that run ends this weekend.

On Friday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Brandon Allen will be the 49ers’ starter against the Green Bay Packers this weekend. Purdy has been dealing with a shoulder injury that he suffered late against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. He has not practiced this week.

It may be a tough adjustment for receivers to catching passes from Allen though. And he may have a whole bunch of rust to shake off in a very tough environment.

Allen has not thrown a pass since 2022 with the Cincinnati Bengals. He has not started a game since 2021 with the Bengals and has not won a start since 2020. For his career he has completed 56.7-percent of his passes for 1,611 yards and 10 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Fans in the comments are perplexed that the team went with Allen over journeyman Joshua Dobbs. The former Steelers, Titans, Cardinals and Vikings quarterback saw more playing time just last year than Allen has in his entire career.

“Why are we playing him over Dobbs???????” one user wrote.

“is josh dobbs not an option??” wrote another.

“Whatever your grieving process is, it’s time to get it started. We’re done done,” a third wrote.

The 49ers’ season is at a crossroads right now. They’re 5-5 right now with very little room for error and a pair of road games against two of the league’s toughest teams in the Packers and Buffalo Bills over the next few days.

Simply put, the 49ers are going to be in a pretty big hole if they don’t win at least one of these next two games, so they’re going to need to bring their A-game to these next few Sundays.
