“I’ve spoken to a lot of women,” Ritika admits. “They all have different perspectives on why red is so significant to them. Red represents new beginnings, passion, and prosperity in Indian culture. Red is also associated with the Hindu goddess Durga, who is the goddess of new beginnings and feminist power.”

In the third millennium BC, Indian monks and hermits wore red clothing. Brides did not begin to wear this gown until the early 16th century.

The color red is also associated with Mars in astrology, which is strongly tied to Hinduism. This is the planet of marriage, and it is associated with abundance and reproduction.

Niki continued: “When a lady marries, she moves in with her husband’s family and leaves her home. Women, in comparison to men, must go through more changes. Their way of praying for a new life is to wear red happy”.
