LeBron James drops a surprise retirement hint: what will the Los Angeles Lakers do?

LeBron James continues to defy Father Time, showcasing a level of dominance that still stuns both teammates and opponents alike. At 40, he seems far from hitting his expiration date on the court, but he’s well aware that nothing lasts forever in sports. He’s beginning to eye retirement, albeit cautiously. In a recent conversation with Steve Nash, he admitted there’s a lot to consider this summer…

Widely regarded by many experts as the greatest player in NBA history, LeBron may have just turned 40, but the numbers are still in his favor. He’s averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2024-25 season—proof that he’s still very much in the game.

In that chat with Steve Nash, he emphasized that there’s plenty he needs to weigh during this upcoming break. And even though he’s still enjoying his time on the hardwood, he made it clear that his most cherished moments happen off the court, with his family. “First, I need to recover physically,” James said. He continued, “My daughter is really into volleyball, so I’ll be in a lot of gyms this summer with her travel league team around California. They go everywhere… Spending quality time with her and taking a family vacation to see what the next chapter looks like. I haven’t had that conversation yet with my family about what’s next for me or what could happen—but we’ll see.”

LeBron James’ future up in the air

When the Minnesota Timberwolves ended the Lakers’ playoff hopes by knocking them out in the first round, LeBron addressed the uncertainty surrounding his future. He admitted he hasn’t made a decision about what comes next, stressing that he needs to talk it over with his loved ones.

“I don’t know. I don’t have an answer for that,” James said, as reported by NBC Sports. “It’s something I’ll talk about with my family, my wife, and my support group, and we’ll see what happens. I’ll have a conversation with myself about how much longer I want to keep playing. To be honest, I don’t have that answer right now. So, we’ll see.”

Still, the Los Angeles Lakers need him. Alongside Luka Dončić, LeBron remains a cornerstone for a franchise facing several key decisions ahead of the NBA offseason. “This is also a business. So, you never really know what the roster’s going to look like next year, beyond the guys with guaranteed contracts. I mean, I’ve got a lot to think about myself. I don’t know what the team’s going to look like. I don’t even know where I stand right now,” he concluded.
