When Matt LaFleur was hired as the Green Bay Packers head coach back in 2019, a big part of his job was to maximize veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He was extremely successful in that task, helping Rodgers to win two MVP awards, in 2020 and 2021.
Now that Rodgers is gone, though, the place where Rodgers will play in 2025 isn’t a big reason for concern. Even if it means playing him twice a year in the NFC North.
For now, it seems like Aaron will sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But the door is not totally closed for Rodgers playing on the Minnesota Vikings.
“It would be a helluva story, wouldn’t it?” LaFleur reacted when asked about the topic during NFL League Meetings on Tuesday.
LaFleur doesn’t seem overly concerned about the possibility. For him, it would only be a real topic when the Packers would actually play the Vikings.
“I mean, there are great players on every team. If it works out, it works out,” LaFleur added. “That’s not something I’ll sit here and constantly think about. Sure, you think about the week of when you’re playing somebody.”

For now, though, the Vikings will wait and move forward with J.J. McCarthy.
Rodgers’ decision
Based on the most recent developments, it does sound like Rodgers will face the Packers in 2025. But just once.
The quarterback visited the Pittsburgh Steelers last week and had a private workout with wide receiver DK Metcalf. And if he indeed signs with Pittsburgh over the next few weeks, the Steelers and Packers are scheduled to play in 2025—it might be in Ireland, by the way.
More important QB updates
The quarterback who really matters for Matt LaFleur is Jordan Love. And there was an update about the Packers starting QB. The head coach revealed that Love won’t need any offseason knee surgery after hurting it in Week 1 of last season against the Philadelphia Eagles, in Brazil.
Love suffered an MCL injury and missed two games. He played through it for the rest of the season, but progressed throughout the year and doesn’t have any remaining issues.
