Matt La Fleur’s Packers Confirm $15M Decision as Jaire Alexander Expected to Be Released

Green Bay is up for some key roster moves. The franchise tag window has closed, and free agency will kick off next week. So before that, the Packers have locked in an offseason decision. And it involves having a Super Bowl champion on the squad. No, it’s not Aaron Rodgers! He still has to find a team for himself. But they are eyeing a friend of Rodgers after putting cornerback Jaire Alexander on the trade block. So, what’s brewing in the city of Green Bay?

Well, in their first off-season move, Matt LaFleur‘s team has reached an agreement with their kicker, Brandon McManus. The former Jaguars kicker was on a one-year, $1.21 million deal with Green Bay. He could have been a free agent had the Packers not offered him a deal. On Tuesday, NFL Insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reported, “The Packers and kicker Brandon McManus reached an agreement today on a three-year, $15.3 million deal, including a $5 million signing bonus.” Thanks to Drew and Jason Rosenhaus, who negotiated this deal with the Packers’ management.

Brandon was originally set to play with the Commanders in the 2024 season after his one-year deal with the Jaguars expired. Last year in March, the Commanders picked him up in free agency on a one-year deal. But in May, two flight attendants accused the 33-year-old of assault. Following the lawsuit filed against him, Washington released him in June. Then, in October, he played his first game of the season against the Texans, donning Green Bay’s jersey.

In his eleven games with Green Bay, he hit 20 of 21 field goals and successfully converted all 30 extra points. On Monday, the team also re-signed LB Isaiah McDuffie on an $8 million deal. So, after re-signing two players on the roster, it’s time to put someone on the trade block.

Roster Reset: Green Bay to release Jaire Alexander

Is Jaire Alexander’s time with the Packers over? After playing seven seasons with the team, Green Bay and Jaire Alexander have mutually decided to part ways. Although the 28-year-old still has two years left on his rookie extension deal, his continuous struggle with injuries has fueled rumors that Matt LaFleur’s team is considering either trading or releasing their star cornerback.

Alexander played only 14 games over the past two seasons. The team has put him on the trade block, but potential suitors would probably weigh his injury history before making an offer. “Two-time All-Pro Jaire Alexander is available via trade, although most executives believe the Packers will ultimately release him,” reported Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz.

During the NFL Combine, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst, when asked about Jaire, said, “We’re working through that. He certainly could be. We gotta get him out there more. Not being able to be out there at his best has frustrated him, and that has frustrated our football team, too.” Well, this sounds less likely that the team might keep him on the squad.

Now, the problem with a Jaire Alexander trade is his $24.9 million cap hit for next season. What franchise could take on a costly risk like that? One team that might consider it is the Jets. After releasing Davante Adams, they are looking for his replacement.

Alex Kay for Bleacher Report proposes a player-for-player swap between the two teams. “A one-for-one swap of two aging but still effective veterans would benefit both sides, filling positions of clear need for the franchises involved while providing Adams and Alexander with much-needed changes of scenery.”

For now, this trade is just speculation. Another move the Packers might make is releasing Jaire, which would allow him to find a fair deal for his future.
