SAN FRANCSICO 49ERS SIGNING DANIEL JONES
With Daniel Jones set to hit free agency after being released from the New York Giants mid-season, and then signing as the backup for the Minnesota Vikings, this will be the chance for Jones to pick his team. The team that will look to sign Jones is the San Francisco 49ers.
WHY SIGN DANIEL JONES?
The potential Jones showed in the 2022 season where he threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions can still be tapped into. For Jones, it will take the ideal situation. Jones has clearly regressed since that season, and it’s led to him throwing seven touchdowns to just eight touchdowns this season with 2,070 yards over a 63.3% completion percentage.
Still, Jones has shown flashes of athleticism, with being able to rush for first downs when plays break down or extend plays outside the pocket. He also has shown decent accuracy, but that area is still sporadic as it all depends on his confidence. When Jones has time, and is confident in the throw he is making, he is able to make outstanding plays. It’s only when he isn’t confident that the issues for Jones start to show with inconsistency in his decision-making.
FIT WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Kyle Shanahan’s offense emphasizes play-action, quick reads, and getting the ball out of the quarterback’s hands quickly. All elements that could play to Jones’ strengths. The 49ers current quarterback situation is questionable. Brock Purdy struggled this season, seeing a decrease in efficiency with just 3,864 yards thrown and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. Defenses adjusted to Purdy and he couldn’t adjust post-snap to what he was seeing. With a contract extension on the horizon in which he will be looking for an estimated $196 million, a quarterback change could be on the horizon.
Jones will be more cost effective, allowing the 49ers to spend that money elsewhere. Plus if there’s any coach that can get the most out of Jones’ potential still it will be Shanahan. Not to mention the situation with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle and Jauan Jennings would be the best for Jones.
