Dallas Cowboys legend backed by Jerry Jones for coaching with McCarthy’s contract expiring

It is Mike McCarthy’s last season with the team as his contract expires

The season of the Dallas Cowboys (3-6) is lost. They would have to win almost every game remaining to make the playoffs, and with Dak Prescott out for the year – who wasn’t having a great season anyway – that’s an impossible mission. This will mark 29 full seasons without a conference championship, let alone a Super Bowl for the Cowboys, yet they’ll remain the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

For the rest of the year, I doubt Jerry Jones’ team will win more than two games. I say two because they face the New York Giants on Thanksgiving and the Carolina Panthers in December. Those are the teams the “Boys” are on par with right now and not the Kansas City Chiefs or Philadelphia Eagles, big changes need to come for next season

Could a former star player be the next Cowboys coach?

One of those changes is the head coach. Mike McCarthy’s contract is up after five seasons with the team, starting in 2020. His tenure included his worst years in his first and last seasons, but he also had three 12-5 seasons and playoff appearances in between. It’s clear that McCarthy will finish this season and then pack his bags for either another team or retirement. According to Jerry Jones himself, a former franchise player could become a head coach in the near future.

That player, as you can see, is Jason Witten, the tight end who spent 16 years with the Cowboys, played in 255 games and ranks second all-time in career receptions and receiving yards by an NFL tight end, trailing only Tony Gonzalez. “Yes. Without hesitation. Yeah, he reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is the head coach up there in Detroit right now,” Jones said.
