During Team USA’s dominant 122-87 victory over Brazil in the Olympic quarterfinals, James had to leave the game after taking an elbow to the head. Upon his return, with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, James walked over to the Team USA bench. At that exact moment, the crowd erupted in cheers as French swimmer Leon Marchand was shown on the big screen.

Mistakenly believing the applause was for him, James acknowledged the crowd’s enthusiasm. This mix-up led to a hilarious reaction from fans both in the stadium and on social media. Many couldn’t help but laugh at James’ overconfidence, mocking him for the gaffe.

LeBron James has been a consistent starter for Team USA throughout the Paris Olympics, but in the quarterfinals against Brazil, he left the court with an injury for the first time. This unexpected turn of events left Team USA fans anxious about their superstar’s condition.



Following the game, head coach Steve Kerr provided an update on James’ injury through Ben Golliver of The Washington Post. 

USA Basketball coach Steve Kerr said LeBron James got four stitches after taking an inadvertent blow to the head during a blowout win over Brazil,” Golliver shared in his post on X.

Before the injury, James played for 17 minutes and contributed 12 points, nine assists, three rebounds, and three steals. With his dominant performance against Brazil, the USA secured their ticket to the semifinal.
