The NBA’s highest-paid player, Jayson Tatum, is ignoring his record-breaking salary because his mother warned him not to

The NBA announced earlier this month that the Boston Celtics and Jayson Tatum have reached an agreement on a three-year, $315 million supermax contract. In light of Tatum’s recent NBA championship, his new contract represents the highest total compensation ever paid to an NBA player. You would think the five-time All-Star would have grand ideas for his windfall with all that cash flowing in. Tatum, on the other hand, will not touch it—as his mother, Brandy Cole, has already said.

He refers to his mom as the “overseer” of his money matters. Cole claimed, “I’m the one that processes all the wires and gets receipts and then ensures everything” during an interview. Apparently, Tatum and his mother made a pact that he would never accept a wage from his father and instead would live off of endorsements and sponsors.

Tatum stated in an interview with Graham Bensinger for In Depth that he and the Celtics had an agreement before the draft that they would have to rely on endorsements for their financial support and that he would not be allowed to spend any of his Celtics earnings. The sale was approved by Tatum’s mother and his accountant, and they haven’t turned back since, he claims.Ex-Duke University player claims he has more than enough money to survive off of the power forward’s rumored over $13 million outside of his current and previous contracts with the Celtics. Evidently, Tatum is thriving, as he has endorsement deals with Jordan, Subway, NBA 2K, and Gatorade.

Tatum, like any athlete, loves to splurge and live it up, according to his parents. Cole claims her son’s “different level of appreciation” for his money sets him apart from other athletes.

Cole said her son’s drive to be better than his background is his obvious motivator, even if the 26-year-old credits his mom with most of the financial preparation. “I believe, generally speaking, we’re not that far removed from living paycheck to paycheck, and he [Tatum] knows what he never wants to go back to,” Cole added. After Jaylen Brоwn’s $285 milliоn cоntract, Tatum’s new cоntract sets a new recоrd. By the time Tatum takes a bоw frоm the NBA, he might have amassed a fоrtune оf оver a billiоn dоllars if he keeps gоing in this directiоn.
